On the next two Camp Balcones Springs blogs, we will be recapping the last week of Term 2 before reporting back tomorrow (Monday) about our Term 3 Opening!

Last Monday, camp – like much of the Austin area – was graced with a large amount of rainfall. Over 2 inches fell out at our Marble Falls camp property, a welcomed respite after such a dry summer in the Austin area thus far, and our spring-fed camp lake (Lake Ted) rose several inches! Of course, a little rain never stops the fun at Camp Balcones Springs. Even though it was pouring, all campers gathered together in our covered pavilion (the GridIron) for our infamous Movie Night tradition. A cool breeze set the mood as boy campers and girl campers gathered with blankets, pillows, and bean bags to sing along to the film “Sing.” After the movie, a shuttle service of camp vehicles took campers back to their cabins so they could stay dry before bed. Everyone slept peacefully as the rain continued throughout the night. And after the slightly later bedtime due to Movie Night,, we let everyone sleep-in so they would be well-rested for Tuesday night’s theme night – the Disglo dance!

Tuesday was one of the dreamiest of days of summer so far, with the rain bringing temperatures down to the 70s and low 80s. All of the outdoor activities were enjoyed by all, and Tuesday night, after a day full of swimming at Lake Ted, field sports, archery, tennis, and cooking classes, campers gathered together in our Rio Grande Dining Hall for one of the most hyped events of the term – our DisGlo dance! This 1970s-themed disco dance brought together the best from the decade of big hair and dance with glow-in-the-dark outfits, games, and black lights in the Rio! Campers sported their best seventies-inspired fashion – bell bottoms, chunky shoes, big hair – and danced the light away under enormous disco balls. Glow-in-the-dark face paint, light-up limbo, and a costume contest were additional highlights of the evening.

The next evening, after a full day of activities, the lovely Senior Camper ladies were the main event at camp, as they played in the Camp Gameday Flag Football game. As all of camp watched, the Silver Spurs and Lonestars battled for the last time before Friday’s all-camp Amazing Race. The Lonestars scored first, taking a 6-0 lead. They followed this up with two touchdowns, extending the lead to 20-0 at the half. The Silver Spurs weren’t going to quit though, scoring their own touchdown to make it 20-6. After trading scores, the Silver Spurs got the ball back, but Elliana Patterson, game MVP, made a game-sealing interception to secure the win for the Lonestars, 26-12. This term’s team competition battle will be decided once and for all after Friday’s Amazing Race event!
