The weekend was jam-packed with exciting events, starting with our annual BCL (Balcones City Limits) music festival! Inspired by the local Austin City Limts, CBS hots its own version of music, feathers, and fun every year in the Balcones Meadow. The line-up was unmatched this year with Austin-based band Motts and former CBS alum Jillie Kerwin. Jillie attended camp for 6 years and now lives in Nashville where she works in advertising by day and music by night. Britain-born and Texas-raised, Jillie has been making a name for herself as a singer/songwriter with her smooth, soulful vocals and country pop melody. Jillie draws inspiration from Taylor Swift and The Chicks and is often compared to Kacey Musgraves. Jillie loves camp so much that she flew all the way from Nashville to perform for our campers, and even wrote and performed a CBS-themed original single entitled, “Camp Balcones Springs is the Place for Me!” After her performance, campers rushed the stage for Jillie’s autograph (we printed out portraits so kiddos could get her signature). We were so honored to have Jillie back at camp!

Next on the docket of exciting events was Camp Gameday, which featured an all-time classic football game. Our oldest girls faced off – Silver Spurs vs Lone Stars style – in a battle for the ages. The game started off with touchdowns on the first 4 offensive plays of the game. Then, the Lone Star defense tightened up, taking a 19-14 lead into halftime. The second half continued the fireworks as both teams traded scores. Then with just 4 minutes left, the Lone Stars scored a touchdown and 2-point conversion to take a 31-26 lead. However, the Silver Spurs took the lead back 33-31 courtesy of Callie Smith’s 4th down 40-yard run! The Lone Stars managed to get the ball with 1:07 left, and the game came down to a 4th-and-inches at midfield, but the mighty Silver Spurs managed to get the stop, securing the victory. What a game!

We are being sure to stay cool as the nation is rocked by the heat. Our air-conditioned spaces and covered pavilions are providing campers and staff plenty of sanctuary from the sun and high temperatures, and we continue to beat the heat with traveling gatorade and water stations to make sure everyone is fully hydrated throughout the day. We always have at least 70 of our campers in the water at every period to make sure all campers are getting plenty of time to cool off. We are also loving our new location for tubing and wakeboarding at Lake Travis! It is a peaceful and deep area of the lake, and the campers are very happy! Sailing is also taking place at Lake Travis, and when not there, our campers are able to cool off and relax in our own spring-fed Lake Ted and the new pool! We are so grateful to have so many ways to stay cool and still enjoy the best of these summer days.

Finally, our Camp Drama Department put on its term performance, this session choosing the classic Matilda!
