Thursday night at Camp Balcones Springswe hosted the saught-after Women’s Dinner, a night of delicious appetizers – like sauteed shrimp, pot stickers, and made-to-order gourmet pizza – dancing and singing, an outdoor movie while the sun was setting, and an inspirational and empowering talk from our Girls Camp Director.
Meanwhile, Boys Camp roasted hot dogs on Balcones Beach, swam in Lake Ted (which has been full to the brim, we are happy to report!), and had a chili cook-off! The boys also watched the NBA finals after dinner, and a few older campers brought their fishign rods and fished at the beach!
On Friday, boys and girls camps swapped places, as the women took to Balcones Beach to enjoy grilled hot dogs, pita pizzas, and S’mores, and participated in a chili cook-off just like the boys.
Back at our Rio Grande Dining Hall, boys camp entered the cafeteria to the tune of “Thunderstruck” and began devouring ribs, baked chicken, and delicious bread. After dinner, they had an epic food fight with cabbage and lettuce and then played a capture the flag game. After showering and getting into their PJ’s, the boys ended the evening watching the new Super Mario movie.
Boy and girl campers alike have been participating in a slew of amazing summer camp activities, including banana boating nad tubing on Lake Travis, swim classes in our brand-new spa pool, and cooking classes celebrating the wonderful cuisine of Italy. Earlier this week, 40 boys learned how to make homemade pizza dough!
Meanwhile, our Work Crew campers had an epic lip sync battle, featuring performances to songs by Justin Bieber, N*SYNC, and Bruno Mars.
Other highlights from the first week of camp include:
The CBS Counselor Hunt – 35 of our counselors hid in secret places (even trees!) all across camp as boy and girl campers went searching for them. Each counselor was worth a certain amount of “money” based on the difficulty of their hiding places, and campers were able to redeem their findings for special prizes based on their earnings. One of the top prizes was an impromptu trip to Sonic in our air-conditioned Sprinter van!
Our camp “Travelers” – the youngest boy and girl campers who have their activity schedules re-planned for them – have been writing letters home this week!
The older girl campers at summer camp have been participating in an etiquette class covering Tiffany table manners and indulging in Rebecca Rather’s scrumptions lemon blueberry scones alongside cucumber sandwiches. They’ve also been watching The Great British Baking Show!
Tonight we get ready for one of camp’s main events – Night Team Competition! The oldest campers of each of our four camp teams (Texas Rangers, Rough Riders, Lonestars, and Silver Spurs) compete in an intense night of basketball at our covered Hippodrome!
