What makes Term 3, the lone three-week session at Camp Balcones Springs, so special are the unique events that occupy the added week of time that third term provides. One of these events is the CBS Talent Show. This year, Dan Kent stole the show with an incredible Frank Sinatra solo. The evening also featured two magic shows, a lip sync battle between the Senior Camper girls and the Senior Camper boys, a beautiful piano performance, and our first ever telepathy talent from camper Cruz!
The last event of the evening was a duo comedy act between two of our leadership team members that was abruptly interrupted by Mission Impossible! This term was the first ever session of camp – in all of CBS history! – in which we have had not one but two Mission Impossible events during the term. Absolutely no one saw it coming! Spies, water balloons, and glow sticks returned to the forefront of everyone’s minds, all to save another camp pup from kidnappers. Dobie cabin successfully found all of the clues first, winning the first ever double Mission Impossible competition at Camp Balcones Springs!
The end of Term 3, week two was capped off with our Dream theme night. For this evening program, campers entered the Rio Grande dining hall to a dream state, high in the clouds with neon lights and fog. The moon hung above the dance floor, and the music was heavenly. Under a spooky, dimly lit tree in the Rose Garden, campers were able to enjoy many side games like painting a starry night, enjoying a midnight snack – chicken and waffles and cereal – and making creations on light tights!
For the last Sunday of Term 3, we were treated to a visit from our 2006 Girls’ Camp Director, Liz Cromwell, who spoke about our verse for the summer, Wrapped in Love, and the importance of honoring your spoken words.
Finally, entering into the last week of Term 3, campers followed the yellow brick road to the land of Oz (the Thicket) for our Wizard of Oz theme night! The evening featured Dorothy’s house in Kansas, a tornado of cotton candy, Glenda’s magical land and bubbles, a rainbow over emerald city, and even a DJ scarecrow. We screened the original movie for campers to watch, had a special appearance from the Horse of a Different Color painted as Dorothy, and an opportunity for boys and girls to defeat the Wicked Witch of the West in the Dunk Tank. Campers used costumes to transform themselves into Dorothy, the Tin Man, the Cowardly Lion, the Scarecrow, Munchkins, and even the most creative costume of all, sported by our camp ponies – the yellow brick road! The evening had us believing we have truly found “somewhere over the rainbow” at CBS.
