The Fourth of July at Camp Balcones Springs is always a special occasion. We interrupt our regular programming to ensure our camp Fourth of July is an event like no other! This year, we had an epic parade during Phunanza, featuring 10 camp vehicles – golf carts, mules , convertibles, trucks, and trailers all decorated for the festivities. Candy and red, white, and blue beads were thrown to parade watchers at the Thicket area. The second time the parade marched through, onlookers were greeted with popsicles – AND water balloons!
After the parade, all of camp gathered together in our Rio Grande Dining Hall for a special holiday dinner of chicken fried chicken and fresh corn on the cob. For dessert, the kitchen staff prepared a gigantic – and delicious – strawberry and blueberry flag cake.
After dinner, we had special programming, featuring an exciting kickball game between the Leadership staff and Work Crew campers, a giant tsunami water slide, cotton candy, snow cones, and of course – a firework show!
