Today, we will be spotlighting the Camp Balcones Springs Horseback Program and recapping some of Term 2, Week 1!
A camper’s first day in the horseback major is filled with a wealth of information and a private one-on-one lesson. In these first sessions, campers begin by learning how to take care of their horse’s grooming needs. A wrangler demonstrates how to use the different brushes to comfortably groom the horse. Campers also learn how to pick up and clean the hoof.
Once grooming is complete, wranglers perform a saddling demonstration. A wrangler will show how to safely approach a horse for mounting and then demonstrate proper posture, turning, stopping, and dismounting. Campers then have the opportunity to ride with a wrangler walking beside them, giving them time to practice their skills. The riders are then matched to a horse according to their personality and experience level. (At Camp Balcones Springs, we have a variety of horses suitable for all levels of camper riding experience.) Once matched, campers will use the same horse, helmet, and saddle for the remainder of their time at camp.
Wednesday evening, camp transformed into a land of sweets, treats, and sugary goodness for our Charlie and the Chocolate Factory theme night at CBS! Campers dressed as Oompa-Loompas and even Sir Wonka himself and indulged in several fun games related to the story’s most iconic scenes. The evening was of course also filled with some delicious snacks and treats.
At Camp Balcones Springs, we are so thrilled that so many of our campers return to work with us as counselors and staff members once they graduate high school. This summer, we are delighted that Eleanor is one of those counselors! Eleanor was a first-year camper when she was in elementary school, and now she is back after many years as a camper. The oldest of five siblings, Eleanor is the perfect choice to counsel our youngest campers.
Stay tuned for highlights from the end of Week 1!
