Every Saturday at Camp Balcones Springs is full of team spirit and competition, but yesterday might have been the most hype Team Day we’ve ever experienced. We opened the day with a gritty flag football matchup between two very strong Silver Spur and Lone Star teams. Coming into the game, experts had said that even though the Lone Stars have the best offense in the nation, their success would depend on getting past the brick wall that is the Silver Spurs defense. Almost the entirety of the first half was a standstill, with the first touchdown coming only one minute before the half ended, putting the Lone Stars up 6-0 after a failed conversion attempt. Following an inspiring halftime performance by the wickedly talented Dance with Hillary class, the Silver Spurs gained possession of the ball.
On the first play of the half, the Silver Spurs quarterback threw a devastating interception, which gave the Lone Stars exactly what they needed: momentum. As the clock ran down, the Lone Stars continued to score, digging the Spurs into a deeper and deeper point deficit. The game ended with a score of 22-0, with the Lone Stars pulling off an all-around blowout.
Saturday night, as they do every term, the Texas Rangers and Rough Riders competed in an electric matchup at our very own Hippodrome under Saturday Night Lights. The game was officiated by Sebastian Grannen (B Compound Head) and Campbell Epps (F Compound Head), and commentary was done by Nicolas Toledo (Phun Head) and Luke Marcum (Sports Head). From the beginning, it was clear that this game was going to be a good one. The Rangers won the tip-off, but almost immediately, Landon Holland (Riders) lit up the scoreboard with a steal and a heavily contested layup. After that, Scott Hickey, the star Rangers point guard, drained a three-point shot in the face of the Riders defense. The first half was a shootout, with the Rangers and Riders trading buckets back and forth, but the Riders eventually gained the upper hand.
To start the second half, William Trexler scored 5 three- pointers in a row, giving the Rough Riders a significant lead. Other notable players in the game were Reid Marcum, Michael Roach, and Damien Duhon (Riders), as well as Miles McDonald, Torren Maynard, and Wilder Marsh (Rangers). The game ended with a score of 36-19 with the Riders pulling out the dominating win.
