Every morning after breakfast, our campers start their day off with Team Competition, AKA “Team Comp”. This friendly competition includes games like kickball, mini soccer, O-Ball, Nuke Em, and Steal the Bacon. The winners of each game earn their respective teams (Rough Riders and Silver Spurs vs. Texas Rangers and Lone Stars) points toward a head start for our highly anticipated Amazing Race at the end of the term.
Our current team competition score is:
Texas Rangers and Lonestars: 16
Rough Riders and Silver Spurs: 20
The Rough Riders and Silver Spurs maintain a lead as we head into the 2nd week of camp!
In exciting news, this weekend CBS hosted two of our beloved team competition traditions: Night Team Competition and Camp Game Day! The weekend at CBS means it’s time for our teams to face off in the ultimate test of athleticism, second only to the Amazing Race of course.
On Saturday night, our senior camper boys took the court for Night Team Competition, playing Rough Riders vs. Texas Rangers under the bright lights of the Hippodrome. Campers gathered around in true game-day fashion, dressed in team colors, holding signs, and cheering until the final countdown.
Our announcers, Shepherd Scimemi (Boy’s Camp Director), and Luke Marcum (former Sports Head and Baseline guest speaker), kept the crowd on the edge of their seats as snow cones and popcorn were passed out from the sidelines. After a close game with a final score of 24-21, the Rough Riders took the win, earning their team an additional 3 points toward the term score.
On Sunday night, our senior camper girls took the field for the Camp Game Day powderpuff game, a fierce matchup between the Silver Spurs and the Lonestars. As the sun set over the soccer field and filled the sky with purple hues, the girls left everything on the field.
In another close game, the Silver Spurs came out on top with a final score of 17-14, earning three more points for their team.
From signs and sideline snacks to bright lights and big wins, it was a weekend full of team spirit, camp tradition, and plenty of phun!
CBS has NEVER had two counselors who are cheerleaders! One is a UT Cheerleader and the other a National Champion Cheerleader. Several cabins have safely practiced and learned “Basing and Flying” poses, one leg stunts, and the basket toss. Our talented counselors have taught cheer fundamentals and compositions. GO CBS!!
The first Friday of every term at CBS brings another set of classic camp traditions. For this special evening program, Girls Camp and Boys Camp split up for two more classic traditions: Men’s Dinner and Girls’ Cookout. Both nights are full of phun, traditions, and make up our classic camp experience!
Men’s Dinner
Men’s Dinner is a favorite CBS tradition, and a night just for the boys. The evening is split into three parts, with a little something for everyone.
First, all 116 boys join together for an intense camp-wide game of Capture the Flag. This term, the Texas Rangers took home the win with their flag hidden at the soccer field. The Rough Riders put up a strong fight with their flag hidden at archery, but the Rangers came out on top.
After the game, campers headed into the Rio for dinner and the famous Men’s Dinner food fight. Each table received a plate full of barbeque and turkey legs, with no utensils and bonus points awarded for the rowdiest cabin to finish their tray.
Then came the main event: the food fight. With the Rio carefully covered in black tarp, a table full of lettuce, bread, and other throwable food was brought out and quickly swiped clean as the fight began.
Afterward, campers headed back to their cabins to shower and change before meeting at the Gridiron for a surprise movie. This term’s movie was Fantastic Mr. Fox!
Girls’ Cookout
While the boys enjoyed Men’s Dinner, Girls Camp gathered at the Thicket for Girls’ Cookout, overlooking the lake as the sun set. Our girls swim at both Papa’s Pool and Lake Ted, have classic hotdogs, grilled pita pizzas, crunchy kettle chips, and crisp apples. The evening was full of swimming, time with friends, and cookout traditions!
The highlight of Girls’ Cookout is the chili cook-off. Each cabin makes their very own chili, given the same base and 90 seconds to concoct their dish. Ingredients up for grabs this year included a cornucopia of spices, Dr. Pepper, Goldfish, Doritos, M&Ms, Skittles, Tabasco, hot honey, fresh onions, Lucky Charms, and cheese. Unique to Girls’ Cookout, each cabin also has a unique chili cheer performed while their chili is tried by our Leadership and Full-Time staff. Awards are given out for best chili, best cheer, and best overall! Our winners from last night were:
Best Chili: Angelina! Best Cheer: San Jac! Best Overall: Ladybird!
And in true camp fashion, there is also an award for worst chili. This year, both Driscoll and Goliad cabins took the title with chilis boasting a whole bottle of tabasco sauce, heaping amounts of cumin and cayenne, and believe it or not, overflowing with Lucky Charms! Their prize? Helping clean up the event!
